Shared Control for Intelligent Wheelchairs: an Implicit Estimation of the User Intention
نویسندگان
چکیده
Elderly and disabled people can experience considerable difficulties when driving an electric wheelchair, especially if they do not possess the fine steering capacities that are required to perform ‘common’ manoeuvres, like avoiding obstacles, docking at tables, driving through doors, etc. This paper describes a possible approach to equip the wheelchair with an intelligent controller that performs low-level assistance, so wheelchair control is shared between the user and this controller. For proper operation, the controller should have a good idea of what the user wants in a particular situation, or in other words what his/her intention could be. This text focuses on an ‘implicit’ estimation of the user’s intention.

Many elderly and disabled people experience difficulties when maneuvering an electric wheelchair. Additionally, many users are not prescribed a standard electric wheelchair because they lack the necessary cognitive skills or their impairment prevents them from steering an electric wheelchair safely. In order to expand the potential group of electric wheelchairs users and in order to make wheelc...
متن کاملAdapted Control Methods for Cerebral Palsy Users of an Intelligent Wheelchair
The development of an intelligent wheelchair (IW) platform that may be easily adapted to any commercial electric powered wheelchair and aid any person with special mobility needs is the main objective of the IntelllWheels project. To be able to achieve this main objective, three distinct control methods were implemented in the IW: manual, shared and automatic. Several algorithms were developed ...
متن کاملHead gesture recognition for hands-free control of an intelligent wheelchair
Purpose – This paper presents a novel hands-free control system for intelligent wheelchairs (IWs) based on visual recognition of head gestures. Design/methodology/approach – A robust head gesture-based interface (HGI), is designed for head gesture recognition of the RoboChair user. The recognised gestures are used to generate motion control commands to the low-level DSP motion controller so tha...
متن کاملUser-based Vehicle Route Guidance in Urban Networks Based on Intelligent Multi Agents Systems and the ANT-Q Algorithm
Guiding vehicles to their destination under dynamic traffic conditions is an important topic in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Nowadays, many complex systems can be controlled by using multi agent systems. Adaptation with the current condition is an important feature of the agents. In this research, formulation of dynamic guidance for vehicles has been investigated based...
متن کاملMobility Assistive Robots for Disabled Patients
2.1 Background Wheelchairs are one of the most important mobility aids for disabled patients and elders. In general, wheelchairs are categorized as manual and powered types. From the viewpoints of movement behaviours, the powered wheelchair can be regarded as a mobile robot (Asai, 2001) if additional environmental sensing components are built and an intelligent motion controller is included. Th...
